How to Cook Egusi Soup Frying Method? Egusi soup is one of the best Nigerian dishes and this soup can be served with all types of swallows. Although it is usually prepared using the boiling method and only a few know about the frying method. Nevertheless, whatever method that you use to cook the Egusi soup either by boiling or frying, this soup is still one of the best delicacies we have in Nigeria.

I will provide the ingredient that you need to prepare this soup and provide steps on how to prepare it.

Ingredients To Cook Egusi Soup

Egusi soup is one of the best Nigerian soups that goes well with several swallows and it requires specific ingredients to prepare. This includes:

  • 2 fresh peppers.
  • 5 medium-sized pomo.
  • 12 medium-sized chunks of beef.
  • 1 stockfish.
  • 1 cup palm oil.
  • Salt to taste.
  • 5 sharki.
  • 2 cups of Egusi seeds.
  • ½ cup of crayfish.
  • 1 bunch of pumpkin cubes.
  • 2 seasoning cubes.

These are the ingredients that you need to have to be able to prepare the Egusi soup. Once you have all these ingredients, then you can proceed to the next step which is the preparation.

How to Cook the Egusi Soup

Although the popular way of preparing Egusi soup is through the boiling method and many don’t know that they can prepare the soup through the frying method. The frying method isn’t known by many, but the result is very satisfying. And lest I forget, the process is very easy. So, here’s how to cook egusi using the frying method.

Step 1

The first step to making Egusi soup is to peel the Egusi seeds by removing the Egusi seeds from the brown shell.  Then you place the peeled Egusi in a dry mill and then you grind the Egusi seeds till it is smooth.

Step 2

Wash the Ugu leaves with little salt and water to kill any germs that might be in the leaves. Then you rinse the pumpkin leaves with clean water. Chop the leaves and put them aside.

Step 3

You can use any type of meat or fish that you want inside the soup. For this recipe, you can use beef, stockfish, sharki, or pomo.  First, you rinse all the stock and put them all together in an empty pot. Afterward, you add enough water to cover the content in the pot.

How to Cook Egusi Soup – Step  4

Cook for about 15 minutes on medium heat and add enough salt to taste and then cook for about another 5 minutes. Turn off the stove and set it aside

Step 5

Pour the palm oil into an empty pot along with the grounded Egusi. On medium heat, stir for about three minutes till it starts to dry up, make sure that it doesn’t burn. Then you pour in the stock, add extra salt, add the ground crayfish, and crushed seasoning cubes, and stir. Then let it cook until the Egusi absorbs all of the stock in the pot.

Step  6

Add the chopped Ugu leaves, stir, and cover the pot. Let it simmer for about 5 to 7 minutes before you turn off the stove.

Then once the Egusi soup is ready you can serve it with the swallow of your choice.  This dish is one of the best dishes that we have in the country.
